Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 8–11

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

Tutorials are presented in the two major areas of health -- fitness and nutrition -- but there's also info on wellness and staying motivated. Videos are used to illustrate proper exercise techniques, with adults and kids exercising together in the clips. Users can design their own workout by combining videos to form a personalized combo of stretching and aerobic exercises.
  • User-created content:

Only the forum page allows for user created content. So far, there isn't much activity on these pages.
  • Messages:

Focus on health and fitness is presented in a no-pressure manner to get kids excited about getting in shape. The site offers incentives, like virtual cash, that can be used to outfit an avatar. Users can also gain status and become team leaders by logging in exercise time and answering questions correctly.

What to watch out for

  • Consumerism:

Online store connected to the site sells Trybe-branded clothing and accessories.

How safe is it?

  • Personal privacy:

The site collects information like first and last name, age and birth-date in order to process membership. Users under 13 require a parents approval via email. Other users can friend a member via an email invitation, which can be accepted or turned down. The site doesn't share personal information with any other companies for promotion purposes.

  • Online interaction:

Users can connect with friends and add them to their Buddy List. From here, they can send messages to each other. There is also a message forum where users can post questions and advice. There are no clearly outlined guidelines for these features, so inappropriate content might get through. There is also a chat feature for the oldest high school users.
  • Parental controls:

Parents need to approve memberships and full memberships require credit card payment. Parents can also change a member's personal information at any time.
