Why We Rated This on for Ages 8 and Up

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

Sprinkled throughout the site are educational nuggets, like tips for online safety and short videos that demonstrate how to tune up a bicycle. The parents' section provides advice and information about raising a tween girl and allows parents to receive a monthly newsletter.
  • Messages:

A self-proclaimed "little sister" to Facebook and MySpace, this site attempts to teach safe skills for using the Internet and allows girls to test the waters of social networking. Primarily positive messages, both by girls and about girls, aim to increase self-esteem and introduce girls to a variety of activities, interests, and occupations. A special space introduces charitable organizations such as Locks of Love and The Elephant Sanctuary and encourages girls to do good things for someone else.

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

    Not an issue.
  • Sex:

    Not an issue.
  • Language:

    Not an issue.
  • Consumerism:

While you can try the site for free for 30 days, there is a cost (payable monthly or yearly) for girls to become members. The free trial period is enough time to explore the site before girls (and their parents) decide to commit to a longer term membership. Gift cards and Girl Ambition merchandise are available for purchase, and "Butterfly Bucks" is virtual currency that allows girls to purchase clothing and accessories to decorate their own virtual girl or room.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

About GirlAmbition

Parents need to know that this interactive online community offers safe email and instant messaging (IM), games, activities, videos, and more. Designed for tween girls, the site touts itself as an "onramp to the Internet" and charges a fee to become a member. Future plans include more robust social networking and blogging opportunities.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about the importance of learning how to use the Internet and social networking tools safely. Why is email, IM, and and social networking so important to tween girls? Does it help or hinder their ability to communicate and socialize? What does it mean to be "empowered?"

Just the site for my girls!

This is an amazing site. Finally something that's got good messages, safe, great first internet/email experience but also has the fun factor that keeps them going back here instead of elsewhere not so healthy. Love the whole video section with Dani. Really like the parents section.....learning this whole new area of "social networking" and cybersafety before my kids get too far ahead of me. It's a perfect site. I will encourage my friends kids to get on an create a "safe" circle.
