What Parents Need to Know

About Virtual Magic Kingdom

Parents need to know that this Disney virtual world, aimed at 8- to 14-year-olds, is only open when staff can moderate it -- 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. EST (7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. PST). The avatars of staff members are clearly marked, wearing mouse ears and Disneyland Guide clothing. Words in chat go through a filter, which also bans e-mail addresses, phone numbers, and city and state names. Although the site is free and contains no ads to speak of, there are plenty of strategically placed billboards in many areas in the community. Kids are also encouraged to "buy" stuff for their personal rooms.

Kids using this site need adult supervision

There's quite a few things parents should know. Sex: Other kids create rooms where people can "Get a bay be" Guys ask girls to be their girlfriends. There's never anything explict, but still. Violence: None. Language: Language is the worst. People "dictionary dance" all the time. I've been called a "beach" for no reason. There were more instances involving other words, but I forget. Drugs/Alcohol: None. Commercialism: Basically, it's one big ad for Disney. Social Behavior: People may try to scam others, and as I said before there's a lot of cursing and some sexual content. Educational Value: Teaches kids about earning and saving money for items, but the risks outweigh the eduactional value.
