I personally love neopets.com because my kids can learn to care for a virtual pet and learn how to spend their money wisely.

Re: Perfect for everyone
I think it is a good learming tool for kids. They have to earn what they want. If they build a house they realize what it takes and cost to run it and to have a pet they have to take care of it. They can learn about stocks and trading things. How to run a store and price things that aren't to low or high and it's just an over all learning tool for kids and have fun while they do it.

Harmless fun for adults, kids will take it to seriously
Admittedly, I have no children so I can only give an opinion on things I have observed as an adult who uses the site as a stress reliever. I have two neopets that I keep well fed and according to the little mood indicator, "very happy." My issue with the site is the excess of ad content. I realize these sites have to be paid for somehow, but if one looks on the gaming site, it's overwhelming. I stay away from the boards, there are to many back biting kids and would recommend that parents monitor their kids activities on them. The overall feel of them was you had to prove you were worthy of being in their esteemed presence. I noticed several "players" seemed to be targets and were constantly picked on. I really don't think it's a kid friendly site. For the excess advertising message boards alone. I'm undoubtedly being prudish, but children shouldn't have to worry about being beaten up on a website where the whole premise is to take care of little monster things. I can see where the value of teaching a child the importance of taking care of a pet comes in. Even though their nothing more than computer icons, I'm quite fond of my mine and foolish as it sounds, feel guilty if I let them go hungry. The games are good for stress relief when taking that short break after preparing that big report for the boss, but I see very little use for the site beyond that. The notion of spending real money to buy computer clothes for your pet, or furniture for a home is beyond me. I most definately say to parents keep your CC's out of reach and don't let your paypal passwords be known. This site will suck you dry if you fall into the commercial side of it.

Very Immature and cash oriented.
I wouldn't recommend Neopets since alot of content is based on the "my pet is better than yours" philosophy. There is no separation between adults and children on the site and the moderators tend to take action against whistle-blowers instead of offensive players. The site is clogged with promotional offers that could end up costing you money if your child happens to the miss the fine print. Its also very cash oriented, many things can be bought with NeoCash, which is bought with real money, instead of NeoPoints, which is earned through the game. (NeoCash is a recent addition, which is fairly sad.) There is another site, Subeta.net, which is nearly identical and a smaller following. The community is much more helpful and more accepting overall. I still wouldn't recommend these types of sites for children under 10.

Great for ages 12 - 90
I love Neopets! I have been using it for 9+years, my current account for 8 1/2years. I just turned 33. I am on a wheelchair, this site helps me with hand/eye co-ordination. My kids love it! I feel safe, After reviewing, and using it, they are F - 9, & M -12. Yes there is alot of product adds, but if you ask me, it shows kids, nothing comes for free. In order for Neopets to provide a site, for kids to play games, in safety, they have to advertise, in order to pay for it to stay running. There is nothing advertised, on this site that run on T.V. Parents need to visit boards FIRST
Every parent should have thier own account to thourghly cheack this site. I have seen very few things for kids under 13,other than way to many ads that they would see every time they click There is way to much bullying and if your report issues there there is a good chance you will lose YOuR account. This site is geared to selling things to your children to play new games that are full of glitches that cause major computer crashes. One example is the popular Key Quest you see on TV. Not to mention the harassment from other players should your computer freeze. This is a very iffy site which has recently added there own toolbar that allows your kids to visit inappropriate content on there other sites while on neo and without your permission. There are security issues with your accounts being CGed, and real money to purchase items will not be returned. First stop for parents should be the newbie board then the help board to see exactly what goes on

Adult Neopets Player - Website is Kid Friendly, but with Caution
Kids can learn about real life issues involving the economy and the value of money/saving. There have, however, been some recent security issues - search Neopets on the Fox News website to learn more. Downloading Mozilla's Firefox internet browser and adding NoScript keeps you pretty safe on the game.

Perfect for older kids, not those under 15.
I've been both a member and a parent of a member of this site and have to say, if you're over the age of 16 it's a great place to have fun, but if you're under the age of 16 it's not a great place to be if you use the message boards. I've dealt with bullying on a massive scale here, but it was fine as I'm an adult. My daughter; however, was destroyed by users on the message boards and the security team (the neopets team) did nothing to protect her and everything to protect the users who were attacking her and bullying her. These people all had aged accounts and seemed to be treated better than the newer members are. I tried speaking to support personnel (Charlotte) and was told that my daughter was at fault as she didn't ignore the taunts and harassment. I don't recommend this site to anyone who has kids under the age of 16.

Good for teens.
Neopets used to be a perfect website for kids to play on. But recently Neopets have begun plastering ads in a lot of places. There are all sorts of ads that can get in your way. Ads that make noise, rollover ads that you can accidently click, ect. There was even an ad that gave me a virus! Neopets has also introduced "Neocash" that you have to buy with real money, and having Neocash gives you a large advantage. This site is not for little kids, as they may accidentally click the ads, but older kids understand what's an ad and what's not. It's an okay website.

Safe, fun, and educational
My daughter found Neopets a few years ago and has been playing it since. I have watched her play, and I have noticed many games on the site have math, reading, and even typing skills. Not being 13, she can't type basically anything, and has little access to the chats. Also, the fact you can buy things for your pet puts a child in a responsible position. The Pets may be made of pixels, but my daughter loves her pet as though it were a real pet, and makes sure it is fed, groomed, played with, and makes sure they are happy. Buying things teaches your kids to handle money, and you can only play every game three times per day. Making money isn't easy as playing games in real life, no, but your kid learns from the games as well as has fun. That's one of the most important things. THE most important would be safety, and that is not an issue. I have seen the site content, talked about it with my child, and I see nothing wrong with it. I do see that there are gambling games, however, I believe it is the duty of the parent to teach kids what is right and wrong, not a website. Also, anyone who is caught breaking neopets rules, which include no scamming, posting links to other sites, hacking, cheating, swearing, or harassing. If the rules are broken, the person who did so will be either "Suspended" for a certain amount of hours or "frozen", meaning your account is deleted permanently. Your kid can Report others for breaking rules, and if a moderator spots anything, it WILL be acknowledged. Neopets may have some violent content, perhaps some gambling, but it is VERY child safe and I actually would WANT parents to have their kids play, it is safe, fun, educational, and kid friendly. It is a great site, and I hope other share my views.

Perfect for middle school kids especially, learning real life related situations in a fun way. Also play games is fun too ;)
I've been playing since I was 11 years old. Things never used to be as money related, it used to be all about caring for your pets, and although I'm not happy that there is a big message about spending money, it also shows you how to make profit and earn money like you would in real life, only they make it fun and not so stressful, also there are a lot of nice people on the site, just don't let your kids click on any links on the site that don't have http://neopets.com/ but other then that it's great! A very family oriented site.

Dr. Death greets you if you attempt to give your pet up for adoption
Before allowing your children to adopt a pet, I suggest doing it yourself and then attempt to put it up for adoption. They have Dr. Death dissuade you from doing it. My 6yr old son was nervous his Neopet would starve because he couldn't go online every day to feed it. We discussed the options and decided it would be best to have a good family who could feed his pet daily adopt it. Can you imagine my horror when I saw Dr. Death at the adoption center?? Supposedly, Neopets want "pet owners" to understand the importance of taking care of their pets, but what kind of a message are they sending when they have a character called Dr. Death at the adoption center?? I'm surprised people from Animal Shelters and the Humane Society aren't up in arms about this one.

I also agree with this rating. I've used neopets since i was 12 and within my first week i had an older teen on there harassing me. There is some problems with neopets, luckily the site took care of the harasser but either way i do agree that some caution should be used

So complex!
Neopets requires tons of unbelievable responsibility. My son, Max told me all about it, and sometimes i monitored him while he played. Its more complex then you'd think. To be an average player, you have to at least be 13! Younger kids, would either spend all there money, or neglect their pets! If you wanted to enjoy neopets to its fullest, you'd have to know everything about it! How to get to the best freebee's, and other things. How to make a profit, You must know how to trian your pet, where to train them, and what to buy. Should i feed my pet this? Should i buy this book? Have they already read it? Hmmm... I think this persons ripping me off. A complicated site! Its fine thought, some parts of it, such as Dinosour land may frighten the kids, and even some adults! Its to advance, in fact, the neohome beta's seem a little to advanced for them, They wont even know what to click if they cant read it. I advise that this game be for teens. But, the problem with the game is that, it isnt high tech enough. Games where there are no effects, and there are only slow movements click by click arent what teens are interested in. Even if they were, the idea of "cool" and "lame" will always be there. Most teens would shy away from a type of game or activity that would be considered "uncool" or would make them seem "nerdy"

After playing it almost 10 years...
I started playing back in 2000 when I was in high school. It was something to kill time, and still is. The main caution I would advise with regards to Neopets is that there is now a heavy emphasis put on the "Neocash" aspects, where real life money is spent for virtual items. The ads are obnoxious, but that's part of the internet, and adblock works well for most of them. If your account ever gets compromised or "Frozen" for any reason though, you may as well forget it. They will just keep responding with the same message, and nothing you can do will convince them if their system says otherwise. It's sad, it used to have REALLY good customer service, but you don't even get what you pay for there.

No Way
Does it concern you that childeren are being exposed to fake money that badly? Neopets seems very safe, my friends 5th grader loves to play on it and chat with her school friends on something like boards. 8 year olds is what I expect someone who is attracted to neopets should be. A 14 year old should NOT be playing such little kid things.

No Major Complaints - Great Site
I've been using Neopets for six years. I got my 9 year old autistic son involved with it because it teaches him what real life can be like using animation. Neopets has made some major changes, revamped everything, but life is all about change so is Neopets. When the change came about I was asked if I wanted to change my Mynci to the new form but I rejected that offer. It's good to have choices. The one thing I don't like is when I post a comment on my guild board and use an apostrophe it tells me it's "inappropriate" but it doesn't happen when I post on the regular boards or neomail. But just like real life, there will be glitches and problems. So, roll with the punches, enjoy the site for what it is (which is wonderful) and keep Neopia alive. (I'm 54 years old and I'm still learning about life). Thanks Neopets

I have to say...
It is a really good website. Kids go on it as well as adults. A guy named Adam made it and sold it. I must say I liked it better when he owned because now it is confusing and neocash just makes people Jeulous. I go on it and I just play some games chat on the boards search around neopets and check my neomail. :-) But what I love doing the most is finding a guild. A guild is like a group of people that chat and play games together. It is like a friend. There are all themes and it is really fun! You can join or create one and it teaches you how to run a shop or service thingy or whatever. You have to create a website (dont have to but) you have to manage it advertise etc. I go on it everyday when I can and it is fun and imaginitive.

Addicting!
I play on this site to this day. It is a great way for kids to learn new words, play fun games and get to know how to take care of pets. In a sense, this is the site that takes a dog(Lupe), cat(Wocky) or fish(Koi) and gives them a chance to name, feed, play with, and customize the wonderful creatures. There are some big challenges with wonderful rewards that are still going on (Altador quest, Altador cup) and a lot of figuring out how much you can spend to have a great time with your pets, no matter what age you are.

neopets for the haves not the have nots
I have played neopets off and on for many years. I recently started playing again and it didn't take long to come to realize that neopets is run by the people who have played constantly for years. They have all the rare items, their pets are all painted unique colors, and they have lots of neopoints. But for anyone else to get these items they have to spend hundreds of thousands of neopoints which take many months or years to accumulate. As far as I am concerned, this is not fair for anyone new to the site or even to other players who may have been around for a short time or just play off and on like myself.

Spammy, time-wasting, but fun.
This site - a time-waster, a money-burner, a ad-centered place, but fun. I've dabbled off and on over the years. The avatar-collecting, as I remember, was fun, as was the Battle Dome. The neoboards, however, were the best part of the site. You could chat cleanly and nicely with other users 13+. The "dailies" and the "money-earning" was stupid, though. And Viacom ruined it for everyone.

Have your own virtual creature!
I like Neopets because it is endless. Endless RPGs are brilliant! However, there are a few concerns that I have. Firstly, there are ads all around the site. They could be advertising games, laptops or clothes. Also, small violence issue. Some games involve gambling where the user can give the pet running the stall 200NP, but not get anything. The user's pets can battle with other people's pets. Finally, there is a pharmacy which sells all kind of syrups, tablets and creams that can make pets better. On the other hand, it's educational because of some games, and safety isn't bad. It may get boring and if you have homework or need to walk the dog, you won't find the time.

Amazing site!
Neopets is an amazing site. If you're under thirteen parental permisson is required because of COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) in order to communicate with other players. There is nothing harmful if you do not have access to communicating. Yes, the ads are getting to be a little too much but some browsers allow you to block ads. The boards contain some offensive content but this shouldn't be a problem as long as your child is mature enough to ignore this. You cannot join Neopets and not be 'harrassed' or 'bullied'. Like real life this can't be ignored. Users will break the rules and most likely you will be scammed of something. Generally though if you stay away from the Newbie Boards there won't be as much 'offensive' content. It's an amazing site that I recommend to anyone.

i put this site on IFFY because although i've played for almost 6 years, i know that there are some people on there that arn't that nice. the site in general is grate but there are some bullying on the boards to people that are "newbies". there are some educational games that help with math, counting, colors, Ect. but on the other hand there are also games that deal with gambleing, and pocker. but alover i say this is a good site, for ages 8+

Kids under 13 can not do the gambling anf betting, and I personally hate that they say it was never hacked, Neopets was hacked a few times, and I also dislike how much money they are raking in with "NC" (Neocash) and ads. I dislike what Viacom has done to it, too. Neopets is not very safe, but most kids cannot acess their forums. I have the conset filled in, so I can go on, and I'm only on because I can chat without people cussing their tooskies off.

Wonderful for all ages.
I am fifteen, and I have played neopets since I was eight or so. My younger siblings also play. Personally, I think it's wonderful for all ages, and younger kids will have a blast. They can feed, clothe, and groom their pets, play games with them, and take them around neopia. Younger kids are also not allowed to gamble or use any of the messaging services. After you turn thirteen, the site has a whole new aspect. You can join guilds, which are just a place for like-minded people to hang out. If you join the right one, you will have an amazing time. Personally, I stay off of the main message boards for the most part, because that is where people will be the rudest. If you want to chat, join a guild, because there is a bit of control over who can chat and who can't there. If you have younger kids playing, they can't buy anything that costs real money with out your permission or their own money, so it shouldn't be a problem. The only age group I would watch out with would be tweens.

Good for teens, iffy for tweens.
I have been using this website for quite literally eight years of my life- and I learned a lot from it. It can teach responsibility, but for me I really learned a lot about grammar and spelling. You can also learn about getting along with people. The site really takes off once you are old enough to interact with others. However.. the entire website has become flooded with advertisements and scams, which is why I think it is better for older kids who have enough experience to watch for these things. Inappropriate images and conduct isn't a problem, though, because those occurances are always and quickly spotted by staff members.

Neopets can be a very difficult website to get on sometimes. If your not careful, you'll get frozen by 'report happy' people. You can't joke about the littlest thing. I don't recommend getting on the neoboards if your young because even if you can reply you can still look. People constantly fight about Twilight or other books. If your planning on making friends I recommend on making your own board about something YOU like.

Fine for some tweens and teens, although not so great for 7-
I've been playing Neopets for six years and I have had a great time, until one night when I was nine, I received a neomail. I know that kids under the age of thirteen can't send or receive neomails unless from the Neopet staff, but I got my mom to sign this paper that allowed me to send neomails and other thirteen year old privliges. Anyways, I got this neomail from a person I didn't know asking me to kiss him and all these other sexual things. I got scared so I got my mom in the room and she kind of talked to the guy and finally she blocked him. A report form was sent to the Neopets staff and a couple days later, my Neopets account got frozen, although my mom didn't say anything bad. So we tried to un-freeze my account but after a while, we gave up. I made a new account and I'm still playing to the day, although I suggest not allowing kids under the age of thirteen (even if you trust and supervise them) to be allowed to have thirteen-year-old privliges. Neopets is still a great way to learn to take care of a pet, and it does teach some responsibility. But there is some gambling involved, and scams for Neopet paint brushes (that allow people to paint their pet a different colors) and other information (like bank account numbers, etc.) are almost everywhere. Even off of Neopets! The message boards are kind of safe, although there is still some cursing that gets around the servers. There are still some nice boards, but kids should be aware. I think Neopets is a great place for some tweens and teens, but definitely not any age below that without major supervision.

Perfect website for anyone from ages 9 to 50
I have been playing neopets for the past three years and honestly, it is one of the best websites I have ever been on. You can make friends, chat, customize your pet/s, play learning games, set goals, and much more. On Neopets, I have made friends with people of many ages, across the WORLD. Safety is not a concern on this website, for there are message board monitors, as well as blocks; so you can't use curse words or sexual content. I have had a blast making new friends, it is a place to escape from the busy, everyday, real world...and relax to something cheerful, and wonderful. Overall, I believe Neopets is the perfect site for almost everyone.

Not anymore.
This website used to be very cute and fun when the original makers owned it. But then they sold it to Viacom. There is a scam going on at the neoboards, shops, and userlookups. It has a fake url placed over the page, so if you go to the page, you go to a website that grabs your cookies. Cookies store all your info. So the scammer can have access to your email, your neopets account, anything you type a pw into. The "magical paintbrush" is not a problem or a scam, so no need to worry about that. But honestly, neopets isn't safe anymore because Viacom isn't doing much about the cookie grabbers.
