Why We Rated This on for Ages 8 and Up

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

You won't find traditional spelling tests or flash card-style learning here. Kids can play brief, but worthwhile logic, reading, math, and spatial relation games. Also, monsters "talk" to their owners with script in cartoon bubbles, encouraging reading.
  • Messages:

These are monster characters, so there's a very mild gross factor, as in the Gross-ery Store. There's also sarcasm in some of the humor.

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

    Not an issue.
  • Sex:

    Not an issue.
  • Language:

Kids who have each other's email addresses can write back and forth freely.
  • Consumerism:

Moshi Monster cell phone charms are sold with a code to enter the site, although after the beta test period kids will be able to play online without buying anything.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

About MoshiMonsters

Parents need to know that this is an educational entertainment site created for today's crop of kids who are learning to read at the same time they're becoming Internet savvy. Kids take care of cute little creatures and earn points to "buy" stuff for their computer-based pet while being introduced to online social networking. The games are educational, yet fun, and move through different levels -- up if the player is doing well, down if they're struggling. The limited social networking features allow kids to send free form messages only to friends whose email addresses they already know, and to send prescripted messages to others who they approve to be their friends. There's a reassuring section for parents that explains the site's concept and safety measures.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about how the safety features on this site compare to other similar sites. What does it means to "know" someone, and are online "friends" really friends? It's never too early to start planting seeds about Internet safety, even with early readers.
