Fighting is a major part of the game, but there is no combat animations or anything, just an attack button an a picture of the enemy. Lots of puns, though some are inappropriate for younger kids. There isn't really much inappropriate things in the game, and there are no ads anywhere.

Best Game Ever
I really like this game and would classify this game as a great game for all ages. but in order to reach the full enjoyment of the game you have to probably be 9 or 10. The game has nothing to do with beer and drugs. who ever wrote this review for the amazing game is a nut case. they probably haven't even played the game themselves and heard a long line of rumors and now they're spreading bad things about a great game. The game as many unique features like the amazing humor of the game, i don't care if the game has double meanings as long as no one pays attention or knows what it means I'm fine with it. In a nutshell this game provides years of fun and entertainment! if i was still a kid today i would be screaming to everyone and to my friends to play. i have personally played this game and i have told my close friends and they all enjoyed it, they gave it a five out of a five! I would rather play this game than spend 20 bucks a month on WoW. Which i do say myself is more violent then this game.

Totally Fantastic!!!
This game is a total 5 stars. It's not for kids, but I don't understand why it was reviewed as no teens, because teens see lots of stuff worse than this everyday at high school.

A truely awesome game.
This game is THE best I have ever encountered, and believe me when I say I have encountered a lot of games. Some people say that all the violent teens/you adults are like this because they are influenced by "shoot-em-up" games, others say that young people get influenced to drink by the media (both TV and Internet). I grew up in a modern world of internet games and "violent media" and let me tell you first hand, they do NOT influence you. Just because I drink in KoL it doesn't mean I drink in real like. Aaaanyway, KoL is a great game full of humor and fun and it has a great community.

KoL In A Nutshell
KoL was never intended to be played by kids, it's always been geared to the above 18 age group. Many of the adventure messages are double entendre's with a great deal of sexual innuendo. They do try to keep the chat channels monitored and the language cleaned up, but they're not there to watch your kid. KoL people try to meet in real life at KoL Conventions or just to hang out with each other. There is a very real danger that someone might be playing the game and trying to lure a minor to meet them. For adults, the game is fun, but it can also be addictive, like any other game. The light parodies of thing in the fight and adventuring messages remind you not to take it too seriously. I still don't understand why alcohol as a way to get adventures was introduced into the game. There are some very responsible adults playing the game, who look out for minors in their clans or in chat, but you should never rely on someone not in your home to monitor your child. If you're going to let your child play KoL, sit down with them and read the messages of the fight screens, read the chat pane, even play it yourself to find out what's going on with it. You should never use KoL or any other game as a babysitter or something to occupy your child while you're doing things around the house. KoL=Kingdom of Loathing.

A lot of mature humor, advanced word choice, and some sexual innuendo
I review this not only as a happily married and employed father of twin boys but also as a long time player of the game. My main issues with this game being played by children is their ability to fully enjoy the humor of the game. I can understand how some parents may feel uncomfortable about some of the subject matter but I think by the time kids find this game interesting they will also be able to handle the themes presented here maturely.

A short course in pop culture
This game is only educational in the sense that watching 60 hours straight of bad TV with your college buddies would be--which is to say, not very. The general format (text and stick figures!) and humor of the game make violence and sexual content much less explicit than on most multi-player combat-based games. Alcohol does play a major role, so avoid for kids who don't have the mature judgment to see the flaws in "drunk=funny" gags. Most of the rest of this cleverly-written game will fly right over younger kids' heads anyway. The game community is mostly mature, supportive, and very protective of kids--off-color language and links are generally not allowed in the player profiles or chat rooms.

Common Sense?
Please, this is ridiculous. There is less violence in this game than in your average children's cartoon. And as for the inclusion of drugs/alcohol, all I can say is, "so what?" Shielding your child is not only not beneficial, it's harmful and irresponsible. By doing so you are stunting your child's cultural and sociological growth.

Player for a years
I've been playing KoL for the past two years and find it an amusing and entertaining game in which there is more to do than just defeat the boss- the commercialism in the game has educational value as does the drunkenness factor- when you get too drunk, you lose stats and meat. It is obvious that the reviewer never actually played the game considering that if you are offended by violence which uses pretend weapons and batman-esque terms, than you are some kind of sheltered. Kids could do a lot worse than KoL. Its a great community and a witty game. The pop culture, and history references encourage the player to look up the reference if they don't get it so they can get the joke. Why dont you give the game a chance and/or actually play it and talk to the gamers before you write your uninformed drivel? What kind of family friendly is this? This is garbage. I wouldnt depend on these reviews when you rate a fun game w/ stick figures and no actual violence or ANY sex as dangerous.

Next time, play the game before reviewing it.
I wanted to review the game for real, but I can't bring myself to say anything other than how horribly biased the official review is. It's clear from the review that the reviewer played the game for maybe 10-15 minutes, and based the review on the misconceptions that they got from that. Early one-shot jokes are misunderstood as underlying themes. For instance, the entrance tests for the equivalent of the generic "thieves' guild" - stealing your own pants without alerting yourself, for instance - are one-off jokes. The claim "Theft is expected in the game, too" is massively overstating the fact. "Of course you often battle pasta..." speaks for itself to any KoL veteran... there is only one place where you battle pasta, and it is one of the most low-level places in the game... if the reviewer had ventured outside the haunted pantry, they'd surprisingly find enemies that aren't haunted food. That it gets a dock for being completely ad-free and supported entirely through donations and a (very small) online store baffles me. Also baffling is that it's majorly docked for even having a combat system at all. Other RPGs get rated up or down depending on the actual combat mechanics, but for KoL the reviewer essentially says "combat? ooh, evil". As for the alcohol? While it certainly exists, and isn't a negligable part of the game, it's not exactly the single most important part either. The game is perfectly playable without ever drinking - indeed you can play as a teetotaler *and get rewarded for doing so* (though, admittedly, you couldn't when the review was written). So, in short: good game, bad review. Certainly worth parental interest before letting your early teenager on, but it's not going to turn a well-adjusted kid into a murdering drunk. And always play games *before* reviewing them... don't just sample the first 10 minutes of play and jump to conclusions.

Great game being unjustly bashed
I really feel you are unnecesarilly bashing a great, funny and above all intelligent game made by truly wonderful people. This is not a Alcohol-related RPG. This is a PARODY RPG, a great game which takes a surprisingly insightful look at todays culture (especially web-culture) and is ful of wit and humour that require a bit of web-trivia knowledge to get. Alcohol is a feature in the game, yes, right next to food, and potions, and a billion different items you can gather but to say the game is alcohol-related is really obtuse. Sure, the symbol of the game is a guy holding a martini and a sword. Why? Because it's funny and is a goofy spin on traditional RPG games - you usually don't imagine your typical fantasy warriors with a fancy drink in their hands. It's not a message - kids, let's get drunk. Also, the game has a great community of nice people, there is no direct sexual contect apart from some double entendres (come on, what kid will get the "orc chasm" pun?), there is no visual violence at all apart from the cartoony descriptions, there is even a swear filter for Pete's sake. To give this game a 17+ is like giving Shrek 23+. This game needs an official second opinion review. There are many other games you should be bashing. Please don't spit on KoL.

AWESOME!!!
This is one of the (if not the) best online rpg I've ever played. As for the drugs and alcohol, they're both not essencial to the game. Sure you can choose to mix up a few screwdrivers and booze it up, but this will eventually make it to where you can't do anything with you adventures besides loose stats and meat($$$). And sure you can get all hopped up on goofballs but after a day of them you're addicted to where if you don't buy them your ststas go down majorly. Basically they're matters of choice. All in all it's a funny game that could be played by all and enjoyed. It's clever and addictive...... a.k.a freakin' amazing.

The reviewer for this site sadly is making up phrases 'Kingdom of Loafing' does exist anywhere but here. Overall I would say a good site that positively encourages literacy, when did you last write a haiku? Is responsible about drugs, they do bad things to you in game. Actively promotes a sensible moderate view of alcohol use, acceptable to all but advocates of temperance, alcohol degardes your performance. Has a positive helpful community, including strictly monitored forums and chat. Has a level of violence that is way below commercial TV. Uses an in game trading system that promotes effort and judicious trading decisions i.e. buy low sell high Also is very amusing, lighten up.

Insanely addictive, entertaining, and fun.
This game is never repetitive, it's nothing like some of the inane 'kids' games' available. Alcohol is NOT a major feature of the game- playing as a teetotaller, for example, is extremely rewarding. Just like life, drinking in excess has harsh penalties. The drink descriptions are sardonic, intended to make adults laugh- and although I'm of legal drinking age in my home country, I have NO urge to swig a bottle of vodka. Real life is supposed to teach us these lessons- this game is intended to poke fun at stuff in real life.

This Game is the Best Ever
The game does have some innapropriate words, but hey, your parents say them all the time. This is a great game. You can get drunk, have a sex change, and other things but thats no reason to freak out. I really don't consider "Goofballs" as drugs. Whoever wrote this review has it all wrong. Kingdom of Loathing is the best.

kingdom of loathing why do they hate you?
i like KOL it's no where near real so how can the beer e offensive? if you drink to much you will not bea able to play until the next day. so beer is not the best thing in the game and is meant to put them away from it! also there is a thing called guffballs or something like that and is like a drug. but after time you will go into guffballs withdrawal and that will ruin you and last a long time! so it has all of the things real life does and has the same negative spin on it like it does in real life.

Made for those with mental maturity.
If you have mental maturity, don't repeat everything you see, like a few jokes against others every now and then, and have even a tenth of a sense of humor, you will like this. There may be a slight alcohol focus, but it can be your best friend and worst enemy, according to the documentation. Sure, there is some innuendo, but it is just plain hilarious. Just look at the ADDemon, or Attention Defecit Demon. The game is vast, funny, and lets you think a bit. Just play it.

A great game, a biased review
I have played this game for a while, and so far, have seen no problems with it. The review was completely biased from a 15 minute gameplay. Sure, the game does involve alcohol, but, they do produce negative results. Last year, I created an account (which was subsequently deleted) and played it for over 2 months. During and prior to that, I never suddenly got the urge to break into my parents liquor cabinet and start drinking away. All of the "inappropriate" activities that are involved are usually in jest and you never actually "kill" anything as far as I have seen. Usually, when battle is over, the loser simply leaves. Therefore, I don't see how someone can rate this game so poorly. Obviously, the "official" reviewer took no more than 5 to 15 minutes of gameplay. Had they taken the time to explore the game and meet the community, they would have realized the true purpose of the game.

Weird, funny, addictice, online game for 13+
Parents should not judge kingdom of loathing by the Common Sense Media website. Its a really cute, fun, weird game! Its great, but it is only for teenagers, and I mean just 13+, for there are a lot of drug/alchohol referances. You can drink and do drugs in the game, but the cool thing is, doing this teaches you how bad drugs and alchohol are. Taking a drug will make you feel great at first, but then you get a low that lasts a very long time and makes you feel awful in the game. Drinking alchohol may improve you a tiny bit, but it also gets you drunk-which is bad. There is a little bit of mild language and some innuendo and double-entendre talk, but its fine for teenagers who are experienced in this area. I don't understand what Common Sense Media thinks is so awful about this game. Its really fun, funny and enjoyable. As for violence in the game, combat is a big part of it, but there is no gore or blood at all, just some words that describe the sounds of the fight like: Kappow! Whack! Zork! Biff! You know! This game is fine for any teenager. Period.

Fine for anyone over the age of 10
Strangely enough, most people tend to focus on the "bad" part of this game. The drink mixing, and the other content associated with alcohol. But in reality, the game is much more than an "alcohol supporting game" it has a flourishing community of players of all age. The violence too is far from anything as bad as games like fps (first person shooters) or most strategy games. Kol (kingdom of loathing, as it is called by players) doesnt even show the fight animations or even any blood and gore. I strongly disagree with the writer of the original review, because the person states that a "fiendish can of asparagus " could invoke violent thoughts in children. Far from it, it more instigates laughter, since a fiendish can of asparagus is actually quite funny. If your worried about the slightly sick minded jokes in the game. You shouldnt worry, because if your kid gets the joke, hes already been exposed to different things, and this is hardly going to matter. All in all, i believe that even though the game may not be suitable for kids under the age of 10, its definetly acceptable for anyone older.

CSM Reviewer is a filthy communist.
I was appalled after reading the review. I actually signed up to write a real review on KoL. Alcohol based? What? Sure, there is alcohol, and yes, it is a valuable aspect of gameplay, but it is neither necessary nor desired in large quantities. Also, those who consume excess quantities of alcohol, namely frat boys are the constant target of the game's humor. Yes it is educational. The mall works as a stock market. If one is at least level 9, then a whole new world of marketing education is available. Playing the market is also greatly encouraged. There is no violence whatsoever. The only violence you can possibly witness is that going on in your own mind as you click corresponding buttons. And anyway, this builds imagination, and what parent wants a kid without imagination. The game involves a lot of puzzle solving as well. This game was made to be fun for everybody. It is simple enough for a 6 year old to enjoy, and has witty pop culture references that a 30 year old would enjoy. Plus, it is a very helpful reference for those in bartending school (though, to reiterate, THE GAME IS NOT BASED ON ALCOHOL). But I digress. Bottom line, this is a great game that is appropriate for all ages over 7 because the word "b****in'" and "bad***" appear. But listen to any of that rap kids listen to today. 1 of those songs is at least 50x worse than all the cursing, drugs and alcohol, and sexual innuedno in KoL put together.

A great game, being criticized for only the worst in the game.
Although CSM's reviewer said most of the bad points in the game (such as language and "double meanings") the game also has a lot of good qualities. For instance, before kol, i didnt have really that many people to talk to, but i have made some friends and can talk to them. ALSO, there are a lot of funny qualities to the game. As GAME INFORMER magazine would quote "Kingdom of Loathing has a "monty python" sense of humor." Also, you may recognize some things in the game such as descriptions and effects that refer to "real" life things. An example is when you put an owl "familiar" in your terrium, and it says "And dont take anything that the jerk with the scar says" which refers to Harry Potter. Also, you may know the movie, a clockwork orange... Another familiar is a clockwork grapefruit....
Also, the CSM reviewer said about the alcohol. You can go in the game, and never drink alcohol. Also, this game has had no "real-life" affects on me, such as me starting to drink. Also, I would refer this game to anyone 10+.

Kol deserves a better rating
I also have been playing KOL for some time now and found it hugely entertaining. It steers you away from the drugs and alchohol because of the withdrawal symptom and the drunkness that you get which makes it harder to play for a while. It also allows you to make new friend with different people around the world while the helpful mods make sure the chat room language is safe for any audience. To conclude I think that KOL is an extremely entertianing game and it inspired me to make my own games and use better English as the mods advise you to.
