Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 15–18

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

Teens can learn about graphic arts and 3-D rendering and build a public room.

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

While you may build online friendship-making skills, the site may desensitize kids to real human interaction and encourage talking with strangers.
  • Violence:

Some home pages are fine; others discuss sado-masochism and have violent images.
  • Sex:

Many user home pages have sexual innuendo, racy graphics, and titillating discussion.
  • Language:

Many home pages are full of offensive talk.
  • Consumerism:

Some ads. Access to restricted areas and credits to purchase higher status items can be bought for $5 to $20.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Found on user home pages.

What Parents Need to Know

About IMVU

Parents need to know that the anime feel of this beautiful 3-D social networking site will encourage younger teens to log on, but it really isn't for kids. The instant messaging focus makes it very easy for strangers to engage with each other via avatars. Users find other people to talk to by searching on age, sex, and location. And, like most social networking sites and virtual worlds, some avatars' home pages are fine, while others contain sexual, violent, or otherwise for-adult-only content. To access most of the really bad content, though, you need to pay $20. You need credits to buy stuff for your avatar, and teens can get creative by designing and selling catalog items or public rooms. You can also use real money to buy credits and VIP passes that get you access to more features (more groups, more clothes, etc.). The free software you have to download only runs on a PC, although Mac users can access home pages from the main IMVU page.

If You Value Your Child's Innocence, Don't Let Them On This Site!

The way IMVU advertises itself (pictures of a male and female IMVU avatars in an erotic pose) is enough to convince you that this site is unacceptable for children and only those over 20 should view it. The site could easily be categorized under 'soft-porn'. It prides itself on being 'a site for everyone', yet has a feature were you can 'get naked' and also were you may, 'have sex'. Also, the security is very thin, and I found myself many times, being told by my computer to 'shut down the system immediately' why? Because 'hot4you453' was trying to track me down. So taking this into consideration... and also the fact that it gives you many viruses, do not, I repeat NOT let your children onto this site.

    What a rubbish opinion

IMVU is a wonderful site, I met loads of friends on it that are now very close to my heart. As for those daft comments about getting AP for raunchy and explicit reasons, that is gumph. I got AP so I could make a public chat room, you can only do this by getting AP or VIP. If you want to see my lovely and innocent HP on it then I'm called RoseMistShadow. Feel free to look.
