Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 15–18

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

Characters participate in iffy behavior associated with fraternity/sorority pledging, including humiliating pledges in various ways. Other inappropriate behavior includes shoplifting. Although there are a few multiracial sorority and fraternity members, the majority of them are Caucasian.
  • Violence:

Some minor pushing and shoving. During one pledge ritual, pledges have to run while water balloons are hurled at them.
  • Sex:

Some strong sexual innuendo. Lots of young female students are seen in skimpy outfits (plunging necklines, mini shorts, etc.) and lacy underwear. Pledges are shown licking whipped cream off the bare chests of college men as part of a pledge ritual. The obligatory sorority car wash includes plenty of wet clothes.
  • Language:

    Language includes words like "bitch."
  • Consumerism:

Logos for AT&T and H&M are prominently featured. Music from bands like People in Planes, The Material, The White Tie Affair, and Tyroneus are played throughout each episode.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

Very visible alcohol consumption (wine, beer) and misuse of prescription pills, all by underage characters.

What Parents Need to Know

About Sorority Forever

Parents need to know that this heavily promoted teen soap opera "airs" online at TheWB.com (alongside other classic WB TVshows) and MySpace and has some interactive elements. There's plenty of strong sexual innuendo, underage drinking, and prescription drug misuse. Female students are also humiliated as part of sorority pledge rituals, and the plot includes a dark mystery that may lead to violence. Corporate sponsors like AT&T and H&M have a very visible presence.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about the growing trend of Internet-only "TV" shows. What's the appeal of online shows? How are Internet series and regular TV shows similar and different? Do you think online shows are more creative than what's on broadcast and cable TV? Families can also discuss what it's like to join a sorority or fraternity. Why do college students "go Greek"? Do you think this series accurately portrays what being in a sorority or fraternity is really like?
