Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 14–18

The good stuff

  • Messages:

Bachelor Barney often displays less-than-ideal attitudes toward women, but his outlook isn't presented as a model to follow. Characters' behavior is a TV-typical mix of good intentions and unintentional missteps.

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

    Occasional comic pratfalls, etc.
  • Sex:

Frequent innuendoes and references to sex; some fooling around on screen -- sex between couples is implied off-camera. Barney is a ladies' man and is constantly putting the moves on women.
  • Language:

"Damn," "bitch," "hell," "ass," "bastard," etc.
  • Consumerism:

    Not an issue.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

The characters are regularly seen drinking at their favorite hangout, a neighborhood bar.

What Parents Need to Know

About How I Met Your Mother

Parents need to know that the level of mature content in this show is similar to that of Friends. Much of the show's humor revolves around sex and relationships; there's lots of flirting and some hook ups -- slick, egotistical bachelor Barney constantly schemes to meet women for sex. A lot of the action takes place at a neighborhood pub, and characters are often shown drinking, sometimes to the point of drunkenness. Expect language like "damn," "bitch," and "ass" as well.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about relationships. Are Ted's wants and beliefs realistic? How does Ted's attitude toward women contrast that of Barney's? Teens and parents might also want to talk about sitcoms in general -- why are there so few these days? Are they more entertaining than reality TV shows?

    A Witty, Slightly Adult Sitcom

HIMYM piles on the sex exactly as much as the average late-tweens/teens do these days. I, being one, would know. The characters really shine when looked at closely enough, and the writers are working on toning down Barney's womanizing. Besides that... yeah. Watch it now, although keep any sixth-graders or younger busy with a coloring book.

    I LOVE THIS SHOW

First of all let me say I'm 11, I just don't know how to change it. Along with Family Guy and American Dad this is probably my favorite show. Language isn't too bad because we've heard it all. I think the bottomline is an 11 year old can watch... wait for it... AND LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!
