Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 14–18

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

Erratic good deeds at best. Character assassination at worst.
  • Violence:

The father owns a gun and produces it now and then.
  • Sex:

Lots of sexual innuendo and references. Sometimes subtle, sometimes overt.
  • Language:

Lewd references to body parts; general cussing. There's nothing PC about this show.
  • Consumerism:

    Not an issue.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

Beer and wine are consumed in each episode.

What Parents Need to Know

About Family Guy

Parents need to know that this series is very funny; the quirky scenarios can induce giggles or even guffaws in grown-ups. But this show isn't meant to be watched by kids or young teens. Unpredictable is the name of the game in the town of Quahog, Rhode Island, where the Griffin family spends most of its time watching television and getting into trouble. The dog, Brian, and the infant, Stewie, are the most intelligent members of the family -- which might set off a few alarm bells in terms of inappropriate role modeling.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about when politically correct attitudes are helpful and when they can be harmful. Peter Griffin's love of television above and beyond everything else could also be discussed -- is this the way anyone should look at the world? If tweens insist upon watching, be sure to take the time to watch it with them to get a sense of what's going on.

    Family Guy Rules!

Family Guy is a great show on television. For some kids it might be a tad vague due to the sexual humor and when they make fun of actors kids may not know about. Keep in mind there is a lot of sexual humor (Quagmire) that kids might not understand. 13 is more or less the youngest age. And there is a lot of drinking scenes as well as sexual humor.

Seth MacFarlane's Humor is One of a Kind in "Family Guy"

This show is R-rated comedy for prime time. It is a good show for teenagers and adults to laugh at. It has a lot of one-liner humor, situational humor, and shock value humor. Episodes have parodied political situations, other media, religious beliefs, everyday situations (such as meeting your in-laws), and even their own broadcasting station FOX. This is NOT a show for kids and is intended for older teens and adults, this has even been confirmed by the show's writing staff. It is funny, unpredictable, and on it's way to become the next "The Simpsons". Bottom line: The show is usually rated TV-14 DLSV. Ages 16+. 5/5 stars. Enjoy.

    Only mature viewers should watch

It's not so much the fact there's sex, language, and drugs in the show, but the fact that much of the humor is crude and needs a mature mind to understand it. I would not let a younger kid watch it simply because the show has bad messages, many of which are meant to be taken as satirical, but kids may not understand that.

Iffy for me, but it totally rocks!

Just so you know, I am 10 and I watch this show. It's hilarious! But as we all know, there's violence, sex, bad BAD language, and drinking. Stewie is my favorite; I even have a stuffed toy of him, but he's a really bad role model.
