Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 14–18

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

The Japanese are conquered by a (fictitious) Western nation, which results in plenty of cultural tensions. Lelouch loves his family and wants to create a world that's safe and peaceful for this sister, but he also wants to avenge the death of his mother. Terrorism is often justified as a means of achieving freedom from the Britannian Empire, but some characters question the morality of these actions.
  • Violence:

Many scenes of people being mowed down by machine guns, as well as people shooting themselves and others at point blank range. Sounds of people crying out and being killed are heard in the background. Lots of images of blood splattering across walls, floors, and people's faces. Trucks, buildings, and other structures are blown up. Discussions of terrorist plots, including use of chemical warfare.
  • Sex:

    Not an issue.
  • Language:

Language includes words like "bad ass."
  • Consumerism:

    Not an issue.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Brief reference to drunk driving.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about the cultural differences between TV shows in the United States and in other countries. What are the distinguishing characteristics of Japanese anime/manga series? Do any U.S. shows that deal with the same topics in similar ways? Families can also discuss the use of violence as a way to fight oppression. How does the media generally depict this kind of violence? Can violence really ever lead to a greater good?

If you're over 13 and love anime, you're in the right place!

Adult Swim has added another winner to its anime lineup. Code Geass is one of my favorite television shows, just the right mix of politics and action. First off, I wouldn't reccomend this to children under 12. There is plenty of blood and shooting. Dictatorship comes into play a lot in this series, and human lives are thrown away as easily as garbage. Lots of mass killing, though not usually shown on screen. I think a normal thing in this show is people saying that sacrificing others for the sake of a better future is okay... Really, the violence in this show is pretty standard for anime. A lot of the plot centers around the the morality of war and dictatorship and killing. The main character, Lelouch, also has the power to control others against their will, and the morality of doing such is often discussed as well. In short, younger kids or teens may get confused or bored. True anime fans will relish in watching Code Geass, though I assure you! It will keep them on the edge of their seat, wanting more.

    Good Series

Honestly I love Code Geass. I must say I love the theme, the characters, and the main story plot. The fact that this could all one day happen(except for the Power of Geass). I talk to all the kids at my school and they agree that its a good anime. I'd recommend it for +14 Because, though it may have violence, little swearing, and partial nudity(if your watching the adult swim versions) they are pretty much mature enough to understand. For Violence, If you allow your kids to play games like Call of Duty, Halo 3, Or even Grand Theft Auto then you shouldn't be intimidated by the violent scenes. As for swearing, Your kids do think it but probably aren't willing to say swears however, its not like the come out saying "Go F*** yourself, f***ing b****" They are mostly saying "Dam, Hell, @$$, Suck" like what normal 14 year olds would probably say. As for nudity, If your watching the Adult Swim Version, they are obviously going to sensor it. However for the most part, if you allow them to play Grand Theft Auto, then you shouldn't be intimidated by the nudity scenes. Plus if they have Anatomy or Human Biology Class then they would know how to take the situation.(Hopefully Seriously). So Over All I'd pretty much recommend it for anyone who is a big anime fan, or like story plots like this. Plus, for Adults, You can probably grasp the concept of what theories or Philosophies than your kids. It took me awhile to grasp it, but I re-watched the show for over 2 times and I understand it. The show can get really boring if you don't grasp to what they are trying to say. The best way is to put it to simplest terms.

    I adore this show<3

Sunrise Studios/Bandai presents you with the season one English dub of the hit anime Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion. This has to be one of my favorite series. It's absolutely fabulous. Sure, there's violence (very mild in my book) and some light nudity (Personally, I could do without that, but it shouldn't be a huge concern; it's only a brief scene or two, and there's little to no sexual contact involved). However, Code Geass is not a show I would let my ten-year-old cousin watch with me (well, maybe, depending on the particular episode), or even my fourty-eight-year-old mother (she's a total pansy when it comes to violence; even the allusion that a person got killed freaks her out), but I just might think it would be alright to let a mature twelve or thirteen-year-old view it. It really depends on who's behind the remote in this situation. All I really know is I couldn't peel my eyes off the screen after about ten episodes or so -- it's that great. So if your kid is into the science fiction genre and doesn't go and quake in a corner at the sight of very obviously animated blood (there's not a lot, trust me) Code Geass is a great pick.
