What to watch out for

  • Messages:

    Typical soap opera behavior -- manipulation, melodrama, love triangles, etc. Characters tend to live materialistic lives, but both Stacey and Will are seen working, and Stacey has plans to attend law school. Most of the cast is Caucasian; Stacey is African-American, and there are some secondary Latino/a characters.

  • Violence:

    Zoe is stalked by a crazed ex-boyfriend who tried to kill her.

  • Sex:

    Heavy flirting, hugging, kissing, and strong sexual innuendo. Women in lacy underwear and bikinis. Love triangles are part of the overall storyline.

  • Language:

    Mostly on the mild side -- "damn," "hell," etc.

  • Consumerism:

    Expensive cars, homes and other luxuries visible.

  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Consumption of alcohol, including wine, is clearly visible.
 

What Parents Need to Know

About Coastal Dreams

Parents need to know that this soap opera about a group of twentysomethings "airs" online at NBC.com (where the network promotes it right alongside broadcast shows) and includes interactive elements. Romance, love triangles, and strong sexual innuendo are major parts of the developing storyline, and the series hints at future violence involving a character's ex-boyfriend. Alcohol consumption is clearly visible, but language is clean for the most part.
