Why We Rated This on for Ages 13 and Up

The good stuff

  • Role models:

Bella is mature and smart, but she can also be dependent and fragile. Edward is respectful and gallant, though often somewhat angsty. Contemporary Native Americans are featured respectfully.

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

Bella and Edward's relationship sends a somewhat mixed message to teens -- it's chaste and loving, but it could also be perceived as obsessive. The Cullens are a very loyal family, and they strive to rise above their baser vampire instincts.
  • Violence:

A lot of the violence is implied: There are fast shots of vampires right before they kill their prey (both human and animal). A group of guys follows Bella down a dark alley and starts harassing her; Edward threatens them. A predatory vampire tries to kill Bella. There's a bloody, vicious fight between an evil vampire and the Cullens. Bella is seriously hurt and ends up in the hospital. Charlie, a sheriff, has weapons, including a shotgun.
  • Sex:

As in the book, Bella and Edward have an intensely romantic (though overall fairly chaste) relationship. They stare and gaze at each other lovingly and share some passionate embraces and a couple of kisses, including one make-out session that takes place on a bed while Bella's in her underwear. Other couples flirt, hold hands, and swoon at each other.
  • Language:

Incredibly mild for a PG-13 film, just like the book: "repulsive," "vile," "dammit."
  • Consumerism:

Brands featured include Volvo, Hummer, Mercedes, Mac, BMW, Lays potato chips, Body Glove, and Southwest. Most appearances are subtle, though Edward's Volvo has some big moments.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

No drinking or smoking by underage characters. Bella's dad and his friend stock up with cans of beer for an afternoon together but aren't actually shown drinking them. Bella gives her dad an unopened can of beer in one scene.

What Parents Need to Know

About Twilight

Parents need to know that this adaptation of author Stephenie Meyer's youth culture phenomenon Twilight was one of the most anticipated movies of 2008. Millions of kids 10 to 18 have read the books, and many more are familiar with them. Like the novel, the film features an intense romantic relationship between a gorgeous vampire and a human girl. There are a few kisses and several stares, hand touches, and embraces. One make-out session takes place on a bed with the girl in her underwear, but it's abruptly stopped. The movie's violence is mostly implied, but there's one particularly disturbing scene involving vampires, blood, a bitten human with a broken limb, and the destruction of an evil vampire. Language and drinking aren't issues; product placement is mostly limited to cars -- Volvo, Hummer, Mercedes, etc.

    Good movie : D

It was a very good movie! There is a scene of sensuality. There is no underage drinking. At the end it gets bloody because a girl gets bit, glass gets stuck in her leg, and her head gets bloody because she got hit against a corner.

    Cheesy....but who doesn't love a little cheese?!

Great Movie! It can be a little cheesy at times but is a great interpretation of the book. I personally recommend though that viewers should get a taste of the book before viewing the movie! Even if you don't enjoy the movie the book is still great!

    Melodramatic Film with Shallow Plotline

I personally despise "Twilight". It's quite cheesy and VERY Melodramatic. My only "concerns" are violence: Which is just intense scenes, threats, etc. Consumerism is obvious: Lay's, Volvo, etc. Personally, the film in my opinion was HILLARIOUS because of the bad acting and OVER DRAMATIC scenes, but some people dig that. If you do, watch and enjoy, if you don't, skip the film.

    Twilight is not bad

This movie is totally appropriate the only iffy things is that bella and edward kiss (Bella is in underwear) and james tricks bella so he can kill her and it gets a little bloody and alice rips james head off!!

40 year old fans vs. 14 year old fans

I can't really say there is anything BAD or GOOD in this movie. I read the book (which was a puke fest of lovy dovyness) and I saw this movie on opening day. I must say, I was the ONLY boy there. The rest were desperate 40 year old women saying that Edward Cullen was "Super fine, how'd I love to touch his buns" and all that crap. Then the other ones were teenage girls with Edward tee shirts and kill Bella shirts. What the heck!? You'd have to be crazy to be into Twilight. But--this movie was a lot better than the book, that's for sure. Enough for me to give it 3 out of 5 stars. It was a pretty good vampire romance, (I specially like how Bella was Vegetarian!) and there was some action and comedy that wasn't in the book. It was a pretty good movie--but not good enough for me to be brave enough to admit my real name. I say if you are a fan, you will enjoy this movie. But if you are a normal untainted person, you'd be better off not watching the Twilight in the distance.

    A Little to Extreme

In the scene where Bella and Edward kiss in my opinion you shouldn't make a big deal because originally it had a lot of sexuality so be lucky that you got what you got. The fighting scene was a little extreme on the commentary Pattinson said " I almost got killed right there . If you are worried about sex don't let them watch Eclipse and Breaking Dawn when those movies come out. I also think it l,eft out some of the book :(

Messages you don't want to send your kids.

One issue I have with the Twilight movie and the books in general is that Bella doesn't seem reasonable at all. Her judgement is lacking severely, and she puts herself in danger and just does what she wants without thinking of the consequences. Furthermore she does all this for a boy. Would you want your daughter running off in the middle of the night if she new her boyfriend was about to do something potentially dangerous? Would you want her thinking its o.k. to obsess over her boyfriend to the levels that Bella does? would you want her thinking that its ok to let her boyfriend come into her room at night? Bella is far to dependent on Edward that she literally seems to have problems with her daily life because of it. No part of her resembles a role model, and her actions send wrong messages. Like lying to your parents to protect your boyfriend. The Family values you get from the vampire family are good. This is a small saving grace. It would have been better had Bella's own family been that dependable, and if Bella would have trusted her own family that much.

    Good for Tweens+

People think this movie has sex. It has none, just a kiss in a bed. It is violent, but compared to Vampire Diaries, it isn't that violent.

Love it, but it may be innaproprate

Personally, this is my favorite movie, but it has some iffy stuff in it, too. There are some very bloody, violent scenes. There are also some romantic scenes. Edward and Bella sometimes make-out. One of these make-out sessions do take place on Bella's bed, when she is in her underwear. Make sure you talk to your child and tell them that some of Bella's descisions were wrong. I love this movie and I love all the books. Watch out for Breaking Dawn. I love it, but Bella and Edward get married and have sex in it. It isn't graphic or anything(about sex) but it does tell about Bella, giving birth. Lot's of bad stuff, huh. I say go for it with a 10 year old. Just beware! These vamps may just give you a scare! LOL! Ha!Seriously watch the movie. And remember to explain to your kids about her wrong descisions and how she had sex in the fourth book!

Relationship issues not appropriate for pre-teens

Though there isn't too much in the way of blatant sex or that type of thing, the whole movie is about an incredibly intense obsessive relationship between a teenage girl and a "teenage" vampire (who is actually over 100 years old) I loved the books, liked the movie, but my pre-teen girls are not seeing it (or reading it) for several years.
