Why We Rated This on for Ages 9 and Up

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

Billy thinks about running away, then decides to face the worm challenge. Kids try to intimidate others, and everyone's afraid of Joe, the school bully. His group of insecure thugs do whatever he says. Name-calling, sibling rivalry, and mocking authority figures are integral to the plot.
  • Violence:

This movie is refreshingly free of slapstick violence; most is of the verbal variety. Students fear Joe's "death ring," which supposedly kills its victims when they reach 8th grade.
  • Sex:

Woody refers to his private parts as "dillydink". Other references to body parts ("sphincter") and potty humor. Mild romantic scenes between characters.
  • Language:

Lots of snot and worm jokes. The boys snicker over crude potty jokes, pet names for male anatomy, other mild profanities.
  • Consumerism:

This movie has an old-fashioned family feel to it, so there are few references to products.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

Dad drinks wine after a hard day at work.

What Parents Need to Know

About How to Eat Fried Worms

Parents need to know that this movie is gross, which is probably why it will appeal to fourth-graders everywhere. There's also some crude potty humor and mild profanity, as well as name-calling and bullying. But the message is straightforward and simple: It's okay to stand up for yourself, and sometimes, you have to eat worms (or in grown-up terms, do something you don't want to do) in order to gain the courage needed to get by in this crazy world.

    Got to know your child

My son loved it. My daughter didn't even want to be in the same room while it was playing because it was too gross. She and I did something else together. Parents, this move is painful to watch as an adult (i.e. no thinking required, gross and over acted, which is why fourth grade boys probably love it).

    Good for younger kids

Its good for kids younger then 12. I took my 12 year old and he didnt like it. My 8 year old did. Its a movie thrown towards younger kids. Of course i didnt enjoy it all but i guess it would be good for younger kids.

    Loved this movie!

I watched this movie with my 8 year old son. I'd read the book, so I knew the story. Since my son is very small for his age, he gets bullied on the playground by kids he doesn't know, and I knew he would really connect with the theme. I loved the ending. And I especially loved how real and natural the kids were in this movie -- like real kids. I'm sure we'll be watching this DVD a lot in the next few months. A winner!!

Rude 'n crude, but fine for kids 8+

Sexual Content (Not an Issue): We briefly see animated Woody's bare bottom. A teacher says "bust of Nefertiti" and students laugh. Woody tells Billy to stop hitting his bike, "it's hurting my dilly dink." Violence (Not an Issue): We see an animated character start to fill up with blood and die, but it's played for laughs and very lightly. Language (Pause): Two child-based slang terms for male genitals ("dilly dink"). Social Behavior (Pause): Joe and his thugs have a condescending, bad attitude towards Billy and Erica. Seeing as this is a movie about consuming worms, crude humor is prevalent. Commercialism (Not an Issue): None. Drug/Alcohol/Tobacco (Not an Issue): None.

A good movie for 9 year olds like me

I loved this movie. It was basically about this kid named Billy who starts a new school and has no friends at that school. Some kids in the school, one day, put worms in Billy's lunch, so Billy laughs it off by saying that he eats worms all the the time. He ends up throwing one in Joe's face. So Joe makes a bet with Billy that Billy can't eat 1 worm. Billy says he can eat 10 worms so they end up having a bet that Billy can't eat 10 worms in 1 day. The loser has to come to school with worms in his pants. They have the bet that Saturday. You predict, will Billy eat the worms and make Joe come to school with worms in his pants?

    Very Bully-centric

My 9-year old son was entertained, BUT I felt too much of the "entertainment" is at the expense of other characters...lots of teasing, name-calling, bullying, victimizing, etc. I almost wish we hadn't watched it, even though everyone "makes nice" in the end...Try "Hoot" (environmental message) or "Holes" (for older kids) instead.

Great Movie, but bad for all teenagers.

This movie probably wanted to lure all fourth graders to the big screen instead of all other summer movies. There are a few references to privates including "sphincter", and the younger son was about to call his private part a d--k, but his playmate stopped him. After you get past all of that, it is an overall great movie for elementary school students, but don't expect to see a teenager there; if you do,it is very rare. Great movie!

    I loved it!

I loved this movie. I loved Blake Garrett(Plug) more! This movie was awesome, although I would not recomend it for someone who throws up easily(like Billy). I recomend it for everyone else(especially girls who are boycazy, like me).
