Why We Rated This on for Ages 6 and Up

The good stuff

  • Messages:

Even though the rich pick on the poor, the disenfranchised pick on hobos and are rude to them, and young bullies needle other children, Kit and her friends work together to rise above the fray, and they do the right thing. Kit's mother is truly a rock, a stabilizing force in a turbulent time.

What to watch out for

  • Violence & scariness:

No outright violence, though two men who appear to be thieves bicker, and bullies at school pick on children who are perceived to be poor. Thieves also chase down children who've figured out that they're criminals.
  • Sexy stuff:

Very mild flirtation between two characters.
  • Language:

"Moron" is as strong as it gets.
  • Consumerism:

Period-accurate product placement, like the National Trailways bus line, Smoot's Board House, etc. More notably, this film is part of the American Girl family, a hugely popular brand among young girls and tweens that includes toys, books, DVDs, and much more.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

About Kit Kittredge: An American Girl

Parents need to know that kids (especially girls) who are familiar with the vast array of American Girl products (dolls, books, DVDs, etc.) will definitely want to see this movie. The good news is that it's entertaining and even thought-provoking, so it doesn't feel like just a way to sell more stuff (though it probably will do exactly that). And it doesn't depart from the age-appropriateness of the brand -- if anything, it's even tamer than some of the direct-to-DVD movies. There's no swearing; very little violence; and plenty of positive messages. Even kids who've never read an American Girl book will have plenty to enjoy.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about why kids want to see this movie -- is it because of the story or because they're already familiar with the American Girl brand? If kids are already familiar with Kit's story from the book, ask them how well the movie brings it to life. How does it compare to what they imagined? Families can also discuss what they learned about the Great Depression from watching the movie. Did you know what a hobo was? Why do they make people nervous? Why is it important that Kit's family welcomes hobos and boarders into their home?

A movie you can watch with the whole family

My 4yr old girls liked it but didn't understand the story line. My 13 yr son liked it. We were able to talk about the Great Depression and how similar things are today. I wish more movies like this could be made. You don't need bad language, violence and sex to make a good movie!

    Good for boys too!

A really good message, and a surprisingly well made movie. I like how it tackles some difficult themes.

    Not great for sensitive kids...

Well I know that this was listed as ok for six year olds, but my daughter really didn't enjoy it. There's a lot of heavy, adult stuff in here, including: families being evicted from their homes due to foreclosure and fathers leaving their families to get jobs (and sometimes never coming back). There is a lot of heartache in this movie, and I kept waiting for the plucky little Kit and her friends to pick up the mood, and they did a little, but to my daughter, who started crying 25 minutes into the movie from the relentless stream of sadness, it came too little too late. It was educational, in that she learned about the Great Depression and the banking and financial system, but I'm actually kind of sorry that I exposed her to all of this at the tender age of 6. If your kids would bear up well under similar plot points, go ahead, but just a warning to parents of the more sensitive tykes....

    Well done, enjoyed by all

I watched this movie with my two daughters, and we all enjoyed it from start to finish. It was a great way to learn about the Great Depression and the challenges of that time, and it also led into a lot of discussions about kindness, courage, and honesty. Very well done, and we will watch it again!

This is one of the best movies I have ever seen! Abigail Breslin is terrific in it. There is absolutely nothing in it that I wouldn't want my kid to see.

It's actually not that bad; pretty good!

I saw this movie, and to tell you the truth, I'm NOT an American Girl fan at all. But, this movie was pretty good and it wasn't really stupid. It's about the depression and some parts are pretty sad. It's not very American Girlish, in my opinion. I think it's something anyone will enjoy. Oh, and parents, you don't need to worry about anything in this movie. It's clean and there's no swearing or anything that would raise a concern.

    Great American girl movie

I watched this with my 10yr old daughter and we both enjoyed the movie. I thought it was age appropriate and had a great message. I find that most of the American Girl movies are right on track for what I want my daughter to watch.

cute but predictable movie for young girls

i saw this movie in theaters when it came out. it is cute, fun, and has an uplifting message. it's not a great movie, but for girls 6-10 it's worth a rent!

    Great Movie!!

My daughter who is 9, myself and my mother all saw this movie together and we loved loved loved it. Kids needs to know about things that happened in the past especially from a kids point of few. There were a few things we talked about together afterwards, I wanted to make sure she understood. GREAT GREAT movie. No Junk in it!!

    Very cute movie

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this very cute movie. I would see it again, with or without my kid! The characters are a lot of fun, I even laughed out loud at some parts. There is absolutely nothing objectionable at all, and I'm rather picky where that is concerned. Highly recommended.

    Awesome for American Girl's first.

For American Girl's first on the big screen this was pretty good. The story is mainly about a young girl growing up in the middle of the depression. No language or violence, but a wild chase at the end. Some flirting but nothing past that. Good PG movie. Great for the family. 7+

    Excellent movie in today's economy

The storyline takes place during the depression. It's easily tranferable to today's economy and peer pressure. My 7 year old daughter hasn't stopped talking about and has her 11 year old brother convinced it's a must see movie. She took heart to County and all of Hobos and has talked about helping the homeless. She has also asked if we will need to sell eggs to pay for gas! You need to see the movie to understand!

    1030's Tutorial Needed

Make sure you give your child a Great Depression tutorial before you go to this movie. I took my 7 year old, and she certainly did not understand the bank repossessing a house, a Dad leaving his family to find a job, a family taking in borders...etc. I was able to explain all this to her after the movie, but I think a little info on these things before the movie would have been helpful for her to understand what was going on in the movie.
