Why We Rated This on for Ages 8 and Up

The good stuff

  • Messages:

Friendship, love, bravery, and loyalty are always major themes in the series. So is the idea of making good choices. Diverse cast and strong female characters, but all major characters are white. A charismatically dishonest teacher gets his comeuppance.

What to watch out for

  • Violence & scariness:

Kids are in peril often, but at the hand of fantasy creatures most of the time: giant spiders attack, and a basilisk (giant serpent) has Medusa-like abilities, nearly killing characters and putting them in a rigid, comatose state -- it chases Harry in a really tense scene. Harry falls from his broom and breaks his arm, then bones in his arm are magically removed. A house elf punishes himself by hitting his head repeatedly. In a practice wizards' duel, students and teachers are thrown to the ground and a (small) snake threatens a student. A spell backfires and Ron coughs up slugs. Harry almost falls out of a flying car. Two main characters almost die in the film's climax.
  • Sexy stuff:

    Not an issue.
  • Language:

Hermione is called a "mudblood" by Draco, an offensive term in the Potter world meaning "dirty blood."
  • Consumerism:

While the candy mentioned wasn't originally real, it is now: Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans, Chocolate Frogs, Jelly Slugs, and more. And then there are the action figures, Lego playsets, wands, Band Aids... you name it.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

About Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Parents need to know that this movie is scarier than the first in the series and characters spend a lot of time in extreme peril. There are frightening creatures, including lots of big spiders and an enormous snake that can kill anyone who looks in its eyes. Though it appears that some characters have been hurt or killed, all the good guys are ultimately fine. Children who are not familiar with the story, however, may be upset. There are also some gross moments when Ron's spell backfires and he spits up slugs, and when another misapplied spell leaves Harry without any bones in his forearm. Friendship, love, bravery, and loyalty are always major themes in the series. So is the idea of making good choices.

This Harry Potter movie is a very good one. I like it very much and I think that the movie people did a VERY good job on Dobby the house elf.

Rare Family with 4 and 6 year old...We love it...LOTS of discussion!!

A LOT scarier than the 1st, but not as much as subsequent films. I have a 4 and a 6 year old and they both love this movie. I've talked to them all throughout the movie many times when it comes to the violent and scary things. My kids have never been scared of much of the scarier things they SHOULD be scared of (ex. Basilisk...my kids love snakes, so a big one is cool to them). My 4 year old hides during the beginning scene where Harry ends up in the "wrong part of town" and gets grabbed by the hand on the shelf. That's the extent of what he's afraid of in this movie. As soon as he hears Harry stuggling with the hand, my son has already popped out of his hiding place and watching the rest of the struggle. Both my kids love the magic and fantasy!! They particularly think the part where Ron's slug spell backfires on him and he starts puking slugs is funny. They love bugs of all types! Please parents...watch the movie first and judge for yourself!!!! MANY kids my kids' ages will NOT do well with this movie. I am VERY involved in talking with my children all throughout their movie time and they are the type of kids that have always been just fine. We are a very rare case!! This is the movie I draw the line at, though. None of the others until they are MUCH older!!Wonderful movie for older kids, though!!

    Scary but a family favorite

The scene with the basilisk is intense for me, as an adult. Nevertheless, my daughter adores this movie and will watch it repeatedly if I let her.

    LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought this movie was great! The basilisk was really well done!!!! This movie might be scary for younger kids, considering the Basilisk, but otherwise it is fine for kids of all ages!! There wasn't any major swaring either. It was very accurate too the book, also. It was not my favorite Harry Potter movie I've seen, but it was still really good. I would recomend it to kids 7 and up.

    Loved it.

The hissing sounds may be scary the first time someone under 8 hears them, but it is nothing too scary. It is by far my favorite Harry Potter movie I have yet to see.

Darker than the first one, and more firghtening and intense...

This movie is darker, more frightening and more intense, and about equally entertaining than the first one. Sensitive kids ages 7, 8 and 9 should not watch this movie, but if they are not sensitive they will do fine. Some language, some snake blood, and some more intensity. I reccomend this to non sensitive 9 year olds and up!

    Amzing!!!

Of course, the Harry Potter movies are really popular, so you just assume they will be good, but this movie is truly fantastic. I have watched it millions of times, and it never gets old. Plus, it stays true enough to the book that fans of the books won't be left dissapointed. For a fun movie night, I strongly recomend getting all the movies in the series!
