Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 12–13

The good stuff

  • Messages:

Homer has an epiphany that other people's feelings, especially his family's, are just as important as his own. He acts selflessly for the first time, well, ever.

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

Besides the many painful gags involving Homer, a couple minor characters die (two are smushed); a robot commits suicide; mobsters haul a dead body in a rug; an angry mob tries to lynch the Simpsons; and Homer, as always, strangles Bart.
  • Sex:

Bart skateboards naked -- his butt showing and a momentary penis shot. Homer and Marge get into bed mostly undressed to make love (no nudity is shown).
  • Language:

For the most part, same as any episode: "ass," "hell," "dammit," "cojones," "crap," "god--m," "screw"
  • Consumerism:

Just well known fictional Springfield brands like Buzz cola, Duff beer, the Kwik-E-Mart, Krusty burgers, etc. Green Day and their song "American Idiot" are spotlighted.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

Bart drinks an entire mini bottle of whiskey; Otto smokes a bong; Homer and his bar mates drink beer at Moe's (and other places as well).

What Parents Need to Know

About The Simpsons Movie

Parents need to know that the movie breaks no new ground content-wise (except for showing Bart's tush and penis). The same hilarious -- but intentionally in-your-face -- levels of humor apply. The movie features a few more edgy words and sight gags, but nothing comes near, say, South Park levels. Minor characters and animals are crushed, kicked, and killed off, sometimes in groan-inducing ways. Bart gets drunk, Marge and Homer share a pre-coital scene, and there are lots of jokes that reference other movies and cultural events that might go over the younger audience members' heads.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about the impact of The Simpsons on popular culture. Is the animated show's popularity even greater than that of Spider-Man, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Harry Potter? Is it wrong to show Bart drinking? What would really happen if a 10-year-old drank a miniature bottle of alcohol? Parents can also discuss caring about the environment and how even one person's actions make a difference.

Most Dramatic, Long, And Exciting Thing The Simpsons Have Ever Done.

This is one of my absolute favorites. I'm a big fan of the show, and the movie doesn't disappoint. To me it's the most exciting and touching story the Simpsons have ever come across. They pulled out some talented writers for this movie, and it's better than some of the episodes I've seen in the past. It's basically like a long episode that every Simpsons fan has been waiting for. Though they did some over the top stuff that they don't usually do in the show. Like showing Bart's private, showing him drink an entire bottle of whiskey, and Homer using the middle finger once; it's definitely PG-13 material. But other than that they keep the same basic concept and humor of the show, but with a more dramatic twist. I loved it, and if you love the show, you'll love the movie too.

Time for an honest review from a fan

I've been a long-time Simpsons fan, but I agree that this movie was a poor effort on their part. I do indeed agree with most of the negative reviews, but most of the people who flame this movie aren't really that honest about it and don't give enough insight to really say what made this movie bad. So here we go, a much more honest review from a long-time Simpsons fan: The storyline was really generic and like others say, it does seem like propaganda, but that's not why I didn't really like this movie all that much. Animations were indeed spectacular, but I'll be lying if I said they weren't trying too hard to impress audience members, because let's not forget, a majority of today's typical viewers care more about animations than quality, which I find sad. As for humor, this is the most important category, in my opinion. It was there, I did laugh a few times, but it was really lacking and I really felt it was trying too hard. Worst thing was that Homer was basically unlikable throughout the entire thing when he's usually a pretty lovable guy from time-to-time. Overall, this movie was really average in my eyes. It had potential and just barely passed. If you're a Simpsons fanboy who thinks all Simpsons stuff HAS to be awesome and the best ever, you're fooling yourself, but who am I to say you can't enjoy it? If you do, go ahead. If you're a hater who never liked Simpsons in the first place, then just don't bother commenting on, let alone watching, this movie in the first place. That is all.
