What Parents Need to Know

About The Outsiders

Parents need to know that THE OUTSIDERS is a film adaptation of a novel detailing teen gang violence in the 1950s. Characters drink, smoke, get in fights, harass schoolchildren, use knives and guns, and commit murder. One character is severely burned and dies. Additionally, the film deals frankly with class stratification. Several of the main characters have troubled home situations.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about class divisions. Why does Cherry tell Ponyboy that she cannot talk to him at school? What makes the division between the socs and the greasers readily apparent? What can explain the origin of the rivalry between the two groups?

    READ THE BOOK!!!!!

This movie was tom cruise's premier movie. It was a very good movie overall, but it has a lot of gang fighting and death of main characters! Read the book first, though!

    Deep, Sad, Awsome, but graphic!

I loved this movie, but it definatly wasn't suitible for kids under thirteen. If you hate blood and violence this isn't the movie for you. It was very deep though and I highly recomend the book. I agree with lala22, you should definatly read the book first. It is the BEST movie ever

Cool movie, i like it! but i reccomend for people to read the book, by S.E Hinton first, it will make more sense. It was a deep movie. It was a good movie overall! maybe watch this movie for only probably 13 and older (once your a teenager, possibly 12, but no younger) great movie though

    I cried so hard!

It is an amazing movie, don't get me wrong. It is the best movie I have ever seen in my life! But I cried so hard at the part where the 2 main characters (Dally and Johnny) die and then the letter, my friends had to literally drag me out of the room because I was "ruining my own birthday party". But it is so relevant to all girls and boys aged 12-18 to show what belonging and friendship really mean and how you can't just judge people on their social class. It is enjoyable for all ages above 12, and leaves it's mark well after watching.

    Inside the Outsiders!

Great movie. Wonderful acting that makes it come to life. It comes raw and real to show you how it was back in the 1950's and i liked that. They didn't try and make it all sugar and cream with a candy coating, they made it how it shouold be. I would definately recomend reading the book as well.

WoW! I didn't think that it would have as much drug content as It did!

It was an awesome movie, but there was alot of cursing, drug content, and voilence. But other than that the actors really portray the characters in the book.

    Best movie ever

THis has been the best movie I ever saw! I cried a few times. Very touching and all the young men who played in it (Ponyboy Sodapop, Darry,etc...) were very handsome!

    Fun to watch!

I made my friends watch this with me. They thought I was crazy (my friends have some serious issues against the 80s, lol), but they ended up loving it- we all found a guy to yak about nonstop. The deaths were horrible, though, I almost cried (I did cry when I read the book. I read it first, so I saw it coming). Great for 12+, and a really good adaptation of the book.

    One of my favorites

I first saw this movie when I was 11 years old and I really enjoyed it. I was in love with the characters, (mainly the Greasers) and I even got my friends interested in this movie. The movie has some violence and two characters die, but it teaches a message. This movie has very little sexual themes, there isn't even any kissing, but one character in particular smacks a girl on her butt and laughs (he's drunk) and another guy harasses a girl at a movie theater. This is movie has many celebs that went on to become huge stars in the 1980's and '90's.

    Great adaptation of the novel!

I hate it when people complain that a director left some stuff out in their film adaptation of a novel. IT'S A MOVIE. The book and movie are two seperate things. With that cleared up, this is a great movie. I nearly cried at one part (anyone who has read the book or seen this movie knows what that is) so keep some tissues on hand if you cry during sad movies. ***** Five stars!

    The Outsiders

I had to read this book for English class. It was a VERY good book. It had a lot of fighting and drugs. The charecters get beat up a a lot. They smoke and drink. I think its more for mature teens. but its a very great book

The only reason that i give it a low rating

the only reason that i give this a low rating is that there is a ton of language, language is used in many places the book did not, the book is so much better, read the book first, dont let the movie kill it for you.

    1 of my favorite movies

Ok.So many teens could relate to this movie(and the book).Yes, there is some stuff in it but nothing they dont know about. If they dont u shelter them too much.

    really bad

This has got to be one of the worst adptations from a book to a movie , i mean, the book was soo gritty and risque, an this movie has been toned down totally by hollywood, one of coppolas worst, if u liked this, i reccomened Rumble fish wich is much better filmaking, very stylish.
