Why We Rated This not for kids

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

    Not an issue.
  • Messages:

Character's moral choices determine whether you're perceived as a model officer or renegade. Those choices also impact future interactions and force you to consider the consequences of your actions.

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

Some blood, but nothing incredibly gory. There are a couple images of impaled humans, but not much else. You'll fight some organic species, humans included, as well as robots. Most battles involve using pistols, shotguns, rifles, and grenades. Most of the emphasis is placed on the dialogue and exploration.
  • Sex:

Partial nudity. One scene alludes to sexual encounter, but shows nothing graphic. Creation of female character opens door for same-sex encounter.
  • Language:

Occasional curse word used, like "ass" and "s--t."
  • Consumerism:

    Not an issue.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

This review of Mass Effect was written by Brett Molina

Parents need to know that this game has one brief sex scene involving an apparent female alien. The scene more alludes to sex as opposed to showing graphic acts -- but the encounter even occurs when you create a female character, which opens the door to same-sex relationships. The in-game violence is on par with most shooters, but isn't gratuitous; players will shoot with pistols, shotguns, and rifles, and use grenades. But the focus of this game is on the interactive storyline where players decide the dialogue of their characte, leading to moral decisions about whether you traverse the galaxy as a diplomatic hero or a renegade willing to bend the laws, and these decisions have consequences.

More on Mass Effect

What’s the Story?

In MASS EFFECT, your character must traverse galaxies to thwart an ancient machine race's effort to wipe out all organic civilization. How that story unfolds is mostly up to you. You'll start by selecting a character -- you can opt for the standard protagonist, Commander Shepherd, or create your own from scratch. Gamers have six classes to choose from, each with varying degrees of combat, technological, and magic-like ("biotic") skills. Players control their character's dialogue, and can therefore dictate how interactions play out in the future. Close

Is It Any Good?

Mass Effect represents a bold attempt at reshaping the RPG, if you can get past the glitches and inconsistent action.

It's anchor is its engaging, robust storyline. Powerful voice acting, lifelike facial models, and cinematic presentation make Mass Effect's story one of the few you can truly invest in. Action, on the other hand, doesn't reach the high bar set by the story. For the most part, it's solid, but suffers through inconsistencies.

This game blew me away the moment i started it up....everything was well exocuted and brilliant, this game will give you diplomatic choices as well as a meter showing if you are a model officer or renagade, all in all satisfying game, though everybody cant get past the brief love-making scene and i call it love making because it isent explicet and its also about time that some people begin to see that like it or not homosexuality is one day gonna br a part of life. s

    Nearly perfect sci-fi RPG.

Although it has some glitches and gameplay issues this is still one of the best RPG's ever made. The violence is not at all graphic and the language isn't bad either. The only real reason not to let kids play the game is the sexual content. It's not explicit but you might not want you're children to experience the brief sexual encounters in this game.

BioWare is, was, and always will be the best RPG publisher on the market. If someone asks me what this game is like, I respond that it's like playing a movie. It is by far the most cinematic game experience I've ever had, especially with the subtitles off. If parents are concerned about sex, I suggest giving this game a chance anyway. The Fox News spot is NOT, I repeat, NOT to be trusted. The pseudo-journalists who report there are right wing, ultra-conservative nut jobs who should get their facts in order, and maybe actually PLAY the game before ripping it apart. Though some parents may find the sex a no go because you do see a woman's buttocks and some provocative dancers in a club. It is ridiculously fun and reminds me of Knights of the Old Republic (one of the best games of all time), except this improves on it and makes the scenes more cinematic. Now, no one immature who just likes shooting will not be enthralled with this game like me. It's really talky, but that's good for people who like depth and story. It's very story driven. It has one of the best stories of any video game. It's great. Parents should just weigh the violence and sex against the story and morality. Absolutely great.
